Reusable tampons
Reusable tampons
Reusable tampons are a sustainable solution to using disposable tampons. The reusable tampons work exactly like disposables, only you can wash them after use and reuse them over and over. Although at first, reusable tampons are more expensive than disposables, it will surely save you money in the long run.
Reusable tampons by Imse
The reusable tampons by Imse are made of two layers of organic cotton. They are free of chemicals and are OEKO-TEX certified. They come in packs of 8. The Imse tampons are available in white, black and several different prints, and in three different sizes (Mini, Regular, Heavy).
Before the first use:
Wash the tampons in the washing machine and/ or boil them before the first use.
User instructions:
Roll up the tampon as tightly or loosely as you wish. You could roll the first bit skewed, so it tapers down towards the end and extends the tampon a little bit. Then turn the string around the tampon. If you wish to, you can knot the string to make the tampon keep its rolled shape. Insert the tampon like a disposable tampon. Change the reusable tampon every 4 to 5 hours, or when saturated. It is best to rinse out the tampon after usage and then store in a wet bag until laundry day. You can also choose to store the tampon dry in a wet bag and let the washing machine rinse it before the actual washing. This does increase the chance of staining. The tampons can also be pre-soaked in cold water with salt, but do make sure to rinse them out. Wash the tampons in a mesh bag with your other laundry. After washing, you can choose to boil them again to make sure there is no soap residue left. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Washable tampons also work well with menstrual briefs on those days when you need a little extra protection. Another good alternative to reusable tampons are menstrual cups, menstrual discs or reusable pads.
Please note: just like disposable tampons, 100% cotton tampons can also cause TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). Change them often and mind the symptoms of TSS. Do not wear the tampons longer than 5 to 6 hours to decrease the chance of TSS.
