FAQ | Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to wash new cloth diapers?
All absorbent parts such as reusable diapers, boosters and training pants should be washed at least three times before first use. Wash these products the first time with detergent, the other times this can also be done with water only. They do not need to be dried in between. This pre-washing removes any substances that may have been used during production and also ensures that the diapers and boosters absorb better.
Products that do not have absorbent properties but are used against the skin are best washed once before use. Like covers and swimming diapers.
How do I wash reusable diapers?
When dosing the detergent, follow the instructions on the packaging. It is also important to take into account your water hardness and the size of your washing drum.
First run a separate pre-wash, preferably cold, with a quantity of detergent for lightly soiled laundry. For example, rinse and spin. Make sure that the washing machine pumps out all the dirty water after this pre-wash.
After the pre-wash, run a main wash at 60 degrees. Use a quantity of detergent for heavily soiled laundry.
For more detailed information, we recommend our washing information page and our blog on the importance of a good washing routine.
Proper washing of cloth diapers is essential to ensure a long lifespan of your cloth diapers. A poor washing routine will cause diapers to wear out quickly and this wear is not covered by the warranty.
What laundry detergent should I use for cloth diapers?
It is best to choose a regular colour detergent that contains less than 5% soap and that contains surface active substances. Most colour detergents from the supermarket are suitable for washing reusable diapers.
We do not recommend Formil detergent (Lidl's own brand) for all diapers and covers. This detergent is too aggressive, causing diapers to break despite a good washing routine.
Ecological detergents are generally quite weak and we therefore do not recommend them. If you still want to wash with an ecological detergent, you should pay extra attention to the dosage. If the dosage is too low, the diapers will not wash properly and will become vulnerable to ammonia build-up and wear.
How do I calculate the correct detergent dosage?
Each detergent has a different dosage table, but most are based on drum size, degree of soiling and water hardness. Also check for which drum size the dosage table is written. If you cannot figure out your dosage, email us with a photo of the dosage table, your water hardness and the drum size of your washing machine.
For the prewash/rinse wash, calculate lightly soiled laundry in combination with your drum size and water hardness.
For the main wash, calculate heavily soiled laundry in combination with your drum size and water hardness.
For calculation examples, see our washing routine blog.
What do you do with the feces?
The stool of babies who are only breastfed is so thin and organic that it is washed away and dissolves during the pre-wash in the washing machine. For formula or solid food, you use a liner in the diaper. This catches most of the stool and can be easily thrown away. This way you don't have whole turds in your washing machine. The liners with the feces should be thrown away with the residual waste.
How do I dry my cloth diapers and covers?
After washing, the diapers are best dried on the line. To protect the elastics, it is best to hang the diapers double over two lines. They will also dry faster. Many diapers can be tumble dried at a low temperature. Always check the washing label first. The diapers will wear out faster if you use the dryer. Do not hang the diapers to dry on a heat source such as a radiator.
Cover should not be tumble dried and are also best hung over two lines to dry. Covers should not be hung in the sun or near a heat source. The heat can cause the PUL layer to come loose.
To speed up the drying process, you can place a dehumidifier near the drying rack. It also helps to dry the diapers in a place where there is a lot of air movement.
What are washing tabs on reusable diapers?
Reusable diapers and covers with hook and loop closure sometimes have washing tabs. This is a short piece of hook and loop, often on the flap, opposite the closure, to which the hook and loop of the closure can be sticked. This way the hook and loop does not stick to the other laundry in the washing machine.
My reusable diapers are not getting clean/ are smelly, what should I do?
We have written an blog about a good washing routine and what to do if it doesn't go well. If you can't figure it out, email your washing routine to [email protected]
Which cover fits over which diaper?
Covers generally fit over most cloth diapers and are often adjustable in size, so they fit from birth to toilet training. Need an overview? Then check out our cover comparison table.
How do I prevent leakage with reusable diapers?
Make sure the liner and absorbent parts do not protrude from the water-resistant outer layer. The diaper should fit snugly and should not be too tight. The romper should not be too tight over it either.
If the diaper is completely saturated when it leaks, you have an absorption problem and you can add an extra booster, for example.
If the diaper is mainly soaking at the front and still dry at the back then your child often pees a lot at once. More than the diaper can absorb at once. In the front of the diaper a cotton booster or a cotton cloth can help for quick absorption.
A good washing routine is also important, this also ensures the optimal absorption of a diaper.
For more tips and trick, please read our blog about leakage.
How can I test if my covers are leaking?
Look at the inside of your cover and stretch them out. If you see a hole or a tear in the PUL layer, your cover are damaged. Unfortunately, the PUL layer cannot be repaired.
Is the PUL layer delaminating? Then it can leak as soon as a hole appears in it.
If you do not see any visible damage, you can do the Tea Towel Test.
The Tea Towel test goes like this:
You put a clean, dry flat diaper or tea towel on the table or the counter. Place the cover / pocket diaper to be tested with the print side down, open on the fabric. Thake a second flat diaper or tea towel make it wet with water and wring it well. It should not be soaking wet, but should be moist. If the second flat diaper is too wet, the cover will always leak. You put these on the open cover. Make sure it doesn't hang over the edges / elastics anywhere and is only on the PUL. If you look under the cover after 15-30 minutes, the bottom flat diaper/ tea towel should still be dry. If you see wet spots, the diaper is no longer good. If you forget the time and wait too long (or if the flat diaper is too wet), then you may eventually see wet spots.
Do I need to wash new incontinence material?
All absorbent parts such as diapers, boosters/inserts and pads should be washed at least three times before first use. Natural materials such as cotton and bamboo only absorb optimally after ten washes.
Think of covers and swimming diapers.

What type of incontinence material do I need?
The type of incontinence material you need depends on a number of factors, with the most important factor being the degree of urine loss.
For people who have drops or spurts of urine loss, for example when exercising or laughing, the products for light urine loss are a good match. Think of the reusable incontinence pads (for drops) or the absorbent underwear (for spurts).
For heavy spurts of urine loss or prolonged dribbling, the incontinence pads with a higher absorption or the absorbent underwear can be used.
For heavy urine loss and faecal loss, you can use the reusable diapers for adults. There are different models and sizes available.
Other factors that can play a role are mobility, the preference for material and budget. These factors are described at all our incontinence material products.
What size reusable incontinence diapers do I need?
The fit of reusable incontinence diapers varies by brand. Each product describes how you can find the best size by measuring. Before washing at home, it is best to try on the diapers first. Products that are unused and unwashed can be returned.
Is there a difference between women and men incontinence products?
There is little difference between women's and men's incontinence material. There is no difference between women's and men's models for reusable incontinence diapers. There are special men's and women's models for absorbent underwear. For men, there are special men's incontinence pads available, but the pads in the women's category can also be used for men in most cases.
Can other people see that I am wearing reusable incontinence diapers?
Choose the right size and fit reusable incontinence diaper that fits your body well. If the incontinence diaper is too big, it will of course be more noticeable.
Reusable incontinence diapers are made of fabric, so they do not creak, like plastic disposable incontinence diapers. You do not hear reusable incontinence diapers when you move.
There are also incontinence diapers that have elastic around the waist, which is also used for boxers. If these diapers stick out above the pants, it will not be noticeable that they are incontinence diapers.
Reusable incontinence diapers do not differ much in thickness from disposable diapers. Disposable diapers expand and become thicker when urine gets into them, washable diapers remain the same thickness, regardless of how much urine gets into them.
How much does reusable incontinence material absorb?
We have calculated the absorption of all incontinence products that we sell. This can be found on the relevant category page, by scrolling down.
The reusable incontinence diapers absorb the most and are also easy to adjust in absorption. By adding boosters, the absorption is increased.
Are reusable incontinence materials reimbursed?
Reusable incontinence material can be reimbursed, but this depends on various factors. The reimbursement usually depends on the health insurer and policy conditions.
In most cases, incontinence material is reimbursed from the basic insurance, but this often applies to disposable material. For reusable incontinence material, you may need additional insurance or a specific application must be submitted to your health insurer. It is best to ask your health insurer whether reusable incontinence material is reimbursed.
Certain healthcare costs can also be reclaimed via the Tax Authorities. This is possible if you have paid the costs yourself and they exceed a certain threshold. You can declare the costs for reusable incontinence material as specific healthcare costs in your tax return. You must keep the correct invoices for this, because you must be able to prove these.
Check the website of the Tax Authorities for the most recent information or ask your tax advisor to see exactly which costs are eligible and how you can best approach this.
Do I need to wash new reusable period products?
New reusable menstrual pad, panty liners and underwear are just like a new towel, they do not absorb yet. To ensure that they can absorb well, they must first be pre-washed at least 3 times. The first time you do this with detergent to remove all the factory substances. The following times can be done without detergent. It does not need to dry in between. You can also wash them with other laundry. Natural substances reach full absorption after about 10 washes.
How do I wash reusable menstrual products?
Reusable menstrual products, such as cloth pads, panty liners and underwear, do not need to be soaked. You store the products dry after use, for example in a wet bag.
First run a separate pre-wash, preferably cold, with a quantity of detergent for lightly soiled laundry. For example, rinse and spin. Make sure that the washing machine pumps away all the dirty water after this pre-wash. To prevent blood stains, it is important to wash them cold.
After the pre-wash, they are washed on a 60 degree program with detergent for heavily soiled laundry. This can be done together with other 60 degree laundry.
You can rinse the products with cold water immediately after use to prevent (blood) stains. Dry the products on the line for the longest lifespan.
What detergent should I use?
It is best to choose a regular color detergent that contains less than 5% soap and that contains surface active substances. Ecological detergents are generally quite weak and we therefore advise against them.

What is the absorbency of reusable menstrual products?
The absorption of all our menstrual products is calculated and can be found on the category page of these products when you scroll down.
With reusable cloth pads, it is often the case that the larger the size, the more it absorbs. The size L or night pads can often also work as maternity pads.
The absorbent layers of the menstrual underwear are generally from front to back and therefore offer good protection.
We offer different sizes and models of menstrual cups and menstrual discs, each with a different content.
What is the difference between a menstrual cup and a menstrual disc?
Cups and discs are both inserted into your vagina, where they collect the blood. Unlike tampons and sponges, for example, they do not absorb anything, but have a purely catching function.
In our blog 'The difference between a cup and a disc' you can read more about the pros and cons, the difference and how they work.
How do I clean my menstrual disc/cup?
Boil the menstrual cup/disc before first use, making sure it is completely submerged. Make sure it does not sit on the bottom of the pan and burn. If necessary, you can put the cup/disc in a metal whisk so that it does not touch the bottom of the pan. Boil the cup/disc again before each period. Instead of boiling, you can also use a steam sterilizer.
When the cup/disc is full, empty it into the toilet. Rinse the cup/disc with drinking water and clean it with mild soap or a special detergent if necessary and reinsert the cup/disc.
If you are on the road and have no cleaning options, an antibacterial spray is useful to have with you.
A cup/disc can discolour over time.
See the instructions provided on how to best clean and insert the product.
How do I insert a menstrual disc?
Fold the edges of the disc together to form a flat figure-eight shape. Slide the disc into your vagina like a tampon and push it up. Then push the bottom point that you are still holding diagonally upwards, behind your pubic bone. You can often feel this well and slide the disc behind it. You can feel with your finger whether the disc is properly positioned under the cervix, because you can feel the cervix through the bottom of most discs. Also feel whether the edge is neat and the disc is not doubled anywhere.
How do I insert a menstrual cup?
There are various folds to comfortably insert a cup. You can simply fold it in half into a C-fold, or push one point inwards and then fold it in half (punch down). You then insert the cup into the vagina and gently push it up. If the cup is in the right place, it usually unfolds automatically. You can rotate the cup a little or wiggle it a bit to get it to unfold properly. By feeling along the edges of the cup with your finger, you can feel whether it has indeed unfolded nicely. When the cup fits properly and is fully unfolded, a vacuum is created in the vagina. The cup should sit a little lower than a tampon or disc, in the narrow part of your vagina. If you place a cup too far up, it can sit next to the cervix and cause leakage.
Before removing a cup, you must always first break the vacuum by squeezing the cup. Once the vacuum is broken, you can carefully pull the cup down by the stem (or at the bottom of the cup). Remember to break the vacuum before removing the cup. Removal can otherwise be painful and any IUD can also be pulled down with it.
Which reusable menstrual product do I choose?
There is a wide range of reusable menstrual products, so there is a suitable product for everyone.
Reusable cloth pads work exactly the same as disposable pads. The only difference is that you throw them in the wash after use, instead of in the trash. Reusable pads and panty liners are usually made of cotton, bamboo or polyester. Instead of an adhesive strip, reusable pads close with a snap, hook and loop or a hook. For people who cycle, ride horses or ride a motorcycle a lot, the snap closure can be annoying. You would then prefer a pad with hook and loop or a hook closure.
Menstrual underwear is a pair of underpants with an absorbent layer. Menstrual underwear does not shift and always stays in place. It is therefore ideal for at night and during sports. If you have a lot of blood loss during your period, menstrual underwear also works well in combination with a cup, disc or tampon. You then have a more certainty to prevent leakage.
A menstrual cup is inserted vaginally and in this way creates a kind of collection container. A cup collects a lot and is therefore ideal if you are away from home a lot or for a long time and during work. They are also very suitable for swimming, sports or during a sauna visit.
A menstrual disc is also inserted vaginally and often has a larger capacity than a cup. A disc is therefore ideal if you are away from home for a long time or during work. They are also very suitable for use while swimming, sports or during a sauna visit. A menstrual disc can be used safely in combination with an IUD, because no vacuum is created. This disc can be used during sex, during which no blood is released. However, the disc is not a contraceptive.
