What are period pants?
Period panties or period underwear can be used as a full-fledged substitute of disposable menstrual pads, cloth menstrual pads, (reusable) tampons, a disc and a cup. The underwear is made of several layers and has a waterproof TPU layer on the outside. The lining to the skin is mostly made of cotton for a comfortable feeling. The absorbent layers generally sit all the way from front to back and thus offer good protection.
Benefits of period underwear
As the name suggests, reusable menstrual underwear is thrown in the wash after use, only to be reused. Disposable period products are thrown away after each use. This is why reusable menstruation products are an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative. Although reusable menstrual pants are more expensive to purchase, you more than earn this back because you save the purchase costs of disposable menstrual products. With proper use, reusable menstrual pants will last for years.
Disposable menstrual products contain a plastic layer, which should prevent leakage. But the plastic does not allow air to pass through, which means that bacteria, unpleasant odors and irritation can develop more quickly. Reusable menstrual underwear has a water-resistant layer that is made of breathable material, which ensures that there is no warm feeling. Reusable menstrual briefs are made of soft fabrics, which makes them comfortable and pleasant to the touch. Also, the reusable underwear does not shift, as with cloth pads, for example.
How do menstrual slips work?
The absorbency of menstrual underwear varies by brand and type. Often they can absorb the amount of several full tampons. If you use them as the only protection, it is often still necessary to replace the menstrual underwear a few times. On the light days of your period or when you use the underwear as extra protection, you can wear the menstrual underwear all day long. Menstrual pants are also ideal for extra security at night. In case of (light) urine loss, menstrual briefs can also be used very well as absorbent underwear. The underwear consists of several layers: a soft layer against your skin, an absorbent core and a waterproof, yet breathable outer.
How do you wash menstrual pants?
You can simply throw used menstrual underwear in the wash. To get the bloodstains out, first run a cold prewash with detergent. This way you loosen the proteins and the blood. Washing at a higher temperature immediately fixes that protein/red dye, which can leave stains behind. Then you run a main wash, it differs per brand at how many degrees these can be washed. You can fill the drum with, for example, towels until it is three-quarters full. This way everything rubs against each other, making it very clean. Do not use fabric softener, this will reduce the absorption. Period pants may not be put in the dryer and cannot be ironed. It is best to let these dry on a drying rack. If there are still stains after washing, hang them soaking wet in the sun. the sun makes the spots less visible.
