Menstrual Discs

Menstrual discs

A menstrual disc looks a bit like a menstrual cup, but works slightly differently. You clamp a disc behind your pubic bone, so that it stays in place. No vacuum is created and you do not have to break the vacuum before removing the disc. The disc is a round or slightly oval disc, made of very soft, flexible silicone. The edge is slightly firmer, so that it can be clamped properly behind your pubic bone.

Discs are sometimes completely round, but can also have a loop or finger notch to make removal a little easier. In general, slightly more blood is released when removing a disc than when removing a cup. On the other hand, a disc often has a larger capacity and for some women it empties itself during the toilet visit. This means that a disc needs to be changed less often than a cup. Discs with a loop or finger notch are a little cleaner to remove than a disc without such a helper.

A menstrual disc can be used safely in combination with an IUD, because no vacuum is created. This disc can be used during sex, where no blood is released. However, the disc is not a contraceptive.

Menstrual disc brands

Hello

The Hello Disc has a handy loop that allows you to easily remove the disc. The diameter is 68 mm and the length of the loop is 48 mm. This disc holds approximately 50 ml. The disc is available in one size that will fit almost everyone. The Hello Disc is suitable for menstruators with a low, normal or high cervix. There are several ways to insert the disc, especially regarding the positioning of the loop.

Nixit

The Nixit disc, or the Nixit cup as they call it, is a One Size disc that will fit almost everyone. It is a fairly soft disc with a large capacity of 70 ml. The disc has a fairly soft and flexible double edge. During insertion, the disc is clamped behind the pubic bone, so that it remains in place under the cervix and can collect the menstrual blood. To widen it, you can hook a finger behind the edge of the disc and gently pull it out. Or you can grab the edge with a finger and thumb and gently pull the disc out.

Saalt

The Saalt menstrual disc is available in two sizes (Small and Regular). For most people, size M will be the best choice. If you have a low cervix, size S may be a better choice. Even if size M is too large, does not catch well behind the pubic bone or if it puts pressure on the urethra or bladder, size S may be a better choice. The Saalt disc has a small notch for your finger, making it relatively easy to remove the disc.

Please note: Menstrual discs cannot be exchanged for hygiene reasons.
